Fanfare: Singletary will have significant impact

Second-round draft pick Sean Singletary will be a very pleasant surprise to Kings fans, and he will take away some of Beno Udrih's bargaining power. Singletary was a three-time first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference player, and even though Virginia struggled his senior year, he led the Cavaliers to a conference co-championship during his junior year. He is a strong character guy and will be a tremendous addition to the Sacramento community. Singletary was known as a scoring point guard (almost 20 points per game with solid NBA three-point range) because of the team's needs. But he is an exceptional passer with great instincts, body control and court awareness.

They were there for the taking

Ithink I could have done a better job in picking players for the Kings in the 2008 draft. The Kings had three picks, and I would have drafted three NBA referees so the team could win the 2009 NBA Finals. Why take a chance on drafting basketball players to determine the outcome of a game?

Fresno State coverage praised

Congratulations to the Fresno State Bulldogs' baseball team for becoming one of the biggest underdogs to win a national championship. And kudos to The Bee for finally giving those 'Dogs their due with two articles Thursday about the champs. Maybe this is a breakthrough for The Bee. For years, they have failed to see Fresno State deserves to be covered as a "regional" college in the Sports section. Fresno State has strong ties to the central valley, as exhibited by the green "V" on the team helmets and jerseys. The national champ baseball team is made up of kids from Fresno, Visalia, Bakersfield and even Roseville.

Elk Grove article is off base

I found Joe Davidson's article on Elk Grove High School athletic director Pete Archerda (Home Cookin', Wednesday) to be unfair, uninformed and cowardly. Davidson said several "big-sport coaches" claimed Archerda lacked proper communication skills. Which coaches is Davidson referring to? Do these coaches not have the guts to put their names behind their statements? Or is The Bee resorting to citing anonymous sources for high school sports editorials? No matter, anyone familiar with Elk Grove sports knows who these disgruntled "big-sport coaches" are. Further, Elk Grove High School athletics flourished under Archerda. The "big sports" in Elk Grove are baseball and football, each of which won section championships while Archerda was the AD. The wrestling and softball teams have enjoyed great success, and the boys basketball team won a league championship for the first time in a decade. Davidson's opinion that Elk Grove should hire a "big name AD" is misguided and ignorant. This is high school, not Sacramento State. This is not "Friday Night Lights." There are other programs on campus besides football and baseball. I have known Archerda for more than 20 years, first as a student and a player for him and then as an assistant coach at Elk Grove. Archerda dedicated more than 20 years of his life to student-athletes at Elk Grove. Davidson should do more research before he takes potshots at a dedicated educator.
