When they needed it most, the Monarchs found their offense.
Ticha Penicheiro provided key baskets down the stretch as the Monarchs outlasted the determined Washington Mystics to win 87-81 on Tuesday night at Arco Arena.
Penicheiro finished with 17 points to go with eight assists. Rebekkah Brunson connected on her first five field-goal attempts and finished with 12 points plus seven rebounds. Kara Lawson, wearing a brace on her injured left shoulder, had 13 points. Adrian Williams-Strong pulled down a game-high eight boards.
Part of a strong overall effort for Sacramento's reserves, guard Scholanda Robinson scored 12 points as the Monarchs' bench contributed 28 points. For Washington, it was all Alana Beard, who finished with a game-high 31 points.
Before an announced crowd of 5,705, Sacramento jumped out to another quick lead, taking an 11-4 advantage with four field goals by Brunson. The Monarchs stayed steady and led 24-17 after the first quarter.
Behind Beard's jumpers, the Mystics rallied to take a brief lead, but the Monarchs were back in front 44-43 at the break.
After Washington regained the lead at the start of the second half, the Monarchs used a 14-2 run to open an 11-point advantage and led 64-58 after three quarters.
But the Mystics had one run left. A three-pointer from the corner by Monique Currie tied the game 75-75 with 1:43 remaining. Sacramento then used an 8-0 run - including a clutch 13-footer by Penicheiro - to take control.
Washington (6-10) has now lost eight in a row to Sacramento.
The Monarchs (8-8) will spend the holiday weekend with a Texas two-step, playing at San Antonio on Thursday and Houston on Saturday. Then, they return to Arco for four consecutive home games.
