Leading Off: Vallejo's Sabathia's saved Brewers' season

Bee Sports Editor/Opinion Vallejo's Sabathia saved Brewers' season

As baseball's regular season ended Sunday, it seems there's justice in the world: The Brewers have made the playoffs.

Thanks to its win over the Cubs – and the Mets' loss to the Marlins – Milwaukee has its first postseason berth since 1982.

Yes, the Tampa Bay Rays were the original feel-good story of this season. The Brewers were another young team that has gained a reputation for scrappy wins – the way the did Sunday.

The Brewers nearly gave away the wild-card spot, but credit has to go to Vallejo's CC Sabathia, whom Milwaukee acquired at midseason, for saving its season.

Sabathia, who had an 11-2 record with the Brewers, pitched a complete-game victory Sunday on three day's rest. He may not win a Cy Young Award because of his limited time in the National League, but why can't he be a Most Valuable Player possibility?

The pitching-thin Brewers probably won't get out of the first round, but they wouldn't be making postseason plans without the rotund left-hander who wears his cap tilted to one side.
