Opportunities by the handful were there for Sierra College on Saturday afternoon in the biggest bowl game in school history. In the end, tradition took over.
City College of San Francisco had clinching second-half drives of 98 and 96 yards to break a 10-10 halftime tie in prevailing 24-10 over the visiting Wolverines in the Hawaiian Punch Bowl.
In a meeting of the top-ranked clubs in Northern California, the No. 1 Rams (10-1) earned their sixth consecutive Northern California championship. They will play in the State Championship Bowl on Saturday in Fresno.
Sierra (9-2) scored a season low and had its eight-game winning streak halted. The Wolverines had averaged 41.5 points in claiming the Valley Conference title.
The Wolverines forced five first-half turnovers but punted twice and missed a field-goal attempt.
Five Eric Brest punts for Sierra were downed inside the CCSF 5. But the Rams responded with the 98- and 96-yard drives, the first capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Jeremiah Masoli to Adrian Hilburn for a 17-10 lead with 8:24 to go.
Lamon Muldrow, the state's leading rusher, had 202 yards on 31 carries for Sierra. Teammate Kevin Will passed for 166 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown toss to Ryan Hedberg. Carl Moore caught seven passes for 72 yards in his last game for Sierra. He has a scholarship offer from Florida.
