Running back James Montgomery, one of the Sacramento area's most recruited athletes while at Cordova High School, could be headed to Florida.
"If Florida offers him (a scholarship), this is where he's going," Gators receiver Carl Moore told a university newspaper after Saturday's spring practice in Gainesville.
Montgomery and Moore played together at Cordova from 2003 to 2006.
Montgomery, who left Cal despite projections he'd be the starter next fall, could not be reached for comment Saturday. But don't expect Montgomery to rush and select a school.
"I know he went to visit schools like Florida and South Carolina this weekend," said Max Miller, Montgomery's coach at Cordova. "But I don't think he is going to make a decision right away,"
Under NCAA rules, Montgomery must sit out a season once he enrolls at another college. As a redshirt freshman last season, the 5-foot-9, 205 pound Montgomery backed up senior Justin Forsett. Montgomery played in 13 games and carried 36 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Montgomery, a 2006 graduate of Cordova, was a Parade Magazine All-American as a senior and rushed for more than 4,900 yards and 89 touchdowns during his high school career.
