Regional Digest: Arnold, Kuebler get harness honor

Legendary promoter Lloyd Arnold and driver Rick Kuebler – two men who helped shape California harness racing history – were inducted Sunday into the state's Harness Racing Hall of Fame.
About 140 horsemen turned out to honor the pair during the 46th annual California Harness Horsemen's Association meeting, held at the Sacramento Hilton.
Arnold, who owned more than 2,500 Standardbreds, including two world champions, in addition to operating harness meets, attracted thousands of fans to harness racing at Cal Expo during the 1970s with his unique promotions.
"My greatest thrill in Sacramento was when we gave away those seven gold Cadillacs and a year of groceries," Arnold recalled of two popular giveaways that brought out crowds of more than 14,000 to Cal Expo. "We were a Class B racetrack, but I don't think there ever was another harness track in the U.S. that tried that kind of promotion. At that time, everybody in Sacramento knew we were here and tried to help us."
Arnold, 79, also ran highly successful meets at several other California tracks and at one time co-owned Los Alamitos Race Course.
Kuebler, 54, retired from racing Jan. 26 when he equaled the lifetime record of his role model – California great Joe O'Brien – with 4,284 wins. Kuebler dominated California racing during the 1980s and early 1990s with 23 driving titles.
