Section D-I football championship set to move to UC Davis

Published: Wednesday, Apr. 23, 2008

Sac-Joaquin Section assistant commissioner John Williams said that the section and UC Davis have agreed in principal to hold the 2008 Sac-Joaquin Section Division I football championship game Dec. 13 at the university.

"UC Davis wants us to come there," Williams said. "They've given us a a ballpark figure a month ago."

He said the section's executive committee on April 14 gave Commissioner Pete Saco permission to move the game.

Last year's D-I title, won by Napa 38-36 over St. Mary's of Stockton, was held at Stagg Memorial Stadium at Pacific.

But since the Tigers dropped their football program after the 1995 season, the stadium has fallen into disrepair. The press box has been condemned, the locker rooms are dilapidated and the section had to bring in portable ticket booths and toilets.
