On the eve of their first exhibition game, the Monarchs learned they had lost All-Star forward DeMya Walker for another season.
While playing in Russia for Nadezhda on April 27, Walker fractured the patella bone in her right knee, the same knee she injured early last season with the Monarchs. Last June 2 at Arco Arena, she tore the patellar tendon which connects the knee cap to the lower leg bone.
The latest injury was not diagnosed until Thursday after Walker returned to Sacramento and was examined by Dr. Richard Marder, the Monarchs' team physician, at UCD Sports Medicine Clinic.
Walker is scheduled to undergo surgery this morning and is expected to miss at least six months.
"This is a hard blow for DeMya, as hard as she worked at her rehabilitation during the offseason," Monarchs general manager John Whisenant said. "It's also hard news for the franchise, but we can deal with it. This will be an opportunity for the other posts on our roster to step up and especially for the young ones to strut their stuff."
Walker started only five games for Sacramento in 2007 before injuring her right knee, which appeared fully recovered. She was cleared by team doctors to play overseas as part of her preparation for the WNBA season.
Through eight WNBA seasons, five in Sacramento, Walker has played in 200 games, averaging 8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds.
