Three former Olympians with local ties pole vaulters Stacy Dragila and Derek Miles and discus thrower Stephanie Brown Trafton are scheduled to compete today in the California Invitational Relays in Modesto.
The 67th annual meet, formerly called the Modesto Relays, begins at 10 a.m. at Modesto Junior College.
Dragila, the 2000 gold medalist from Placer High School and Yuba College, is set to compete in the women's pole vault at 3 p.m. Trafton, who moved to Galt in 2005, is entered in the women's discus at 3:30 p.m., and Miles, a Bella Vista High School graduate, is in the men's pole vault field that competes at 4:30 p.m.
Trafton, a 2004 Olympian, threw a personal-best 217 feet, 1 inch the longest throw in the world this year Thursday in Salinas.
"I had a pretty good throw," said Trafton, 28. "The wind kind of helped out."
Dragila, 37, said she's healthy again after undergoing surgery to repair torn Achilles' tendons in 2006 and 2007.
"I'm getting closer," said Dragila, who has twice cleared 13-7 1/4 this season as she tries to regain the form that helped her clear a personal-best 15-10 in 2004 before she failed to advance out of qualifying in the Olympics.
"I'm just working on technical things now. Hopefully after that, everything will just come together."
Miles, 35, finished seventh in the 2004 Olympics. He has cleared 19-0 1/4 indoors this year, below his indoor best of 19-2 1/4 and his outdoor peak of 19-0 3/4.
Top athletes scheduled to compete include shot putters John Godina and Christian Cantwell; pole vaulters Jenn Stuczynski, Toby Stevenson and Tim Mack; triple jumper Kenta Bell; 800-meter runner Khadevis Robinson; and discus thrower Suzy Powell from Modesto.
