The WNBA season doesn't start until Saturday, but the Monarchs already look as if they've been through hard games, suffering setbacks that have sidelined several veterans during training.
"No more injuries," forward Rebekkah Brunson said, repeating a Monarchs mantra for 2008. "We've had enough of those already."
Surgery to repair a fractured knee will keep All-Star forward DeMya Walker out for the season. Reserve forward Linda Fröhlich has yet to report to camp because of a puzzling bout with vertigo.
Guards Ticha Penicheiro, Chelsea Newton and Scholanda Robinson have sat more than practiced, but they're feeling better as Saturday's opener against the San Antonio Silver Stars approaches.
Penicheiro, still nursing a strained right Achilles' tendon, has been frustrated.
"I'm OK, but I'm still not where I want to be," she said. "I feel a little bit rusty. We only have (two) more practices and a big game on Saturday, so I better be fine."
Newton suffered abdominal pains Tuesday to go with last week's groin strain. Her status is day-to-day.
After arthroscopic surgery on her right knee April 16, Robinson started practicing this week.
"I'm doing really good now," Robinson said. "The pain is gone."
Dr. Kirk Lewis shaved off loose cartilage that stuck out "like a hangnail" inside her knee, causing irritation, she said.
Robinson, who has dealt with tendinitis, noticed the pain when she stepped up her workouts before training camp.
"I've had pain before, but this was a different kind of pain, and it swelled up," she said. "I couldn't do a full squat without it hurting really bad. That's when we decided we had to do something. I'm really glad we did."
Monarchs hit mall Tonight from 6 to 8 p.m., the Monarchs will show off their skills ballhandling and shooting, not shopping on the Center Court of the Arden Fair Mall. Billed as "Meet the Monarchs Night," the free event will be inside the mall in front of Nordstrom on a temporary basketball court.
Penicheiro, guard Kara Lawson and coach Jenny Boucek will discuss the team and its prospects. They will be joined by Mascot Monty and the Hip Hop Crew.
