Michael Stember, the former Jesuit High School and Stanford University running star who earned a berth on the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, has retired from track and field.

Stember, 30, said Tuesday he was retiring because of a calf tear suffered in a race at UCLA in early April. An Olympian at 1,500 meters, he was attempting to make the U.S. team in the 800 meters but had not attained a qualifying time for the U.S. Olympic Trials, set for June 27-July 6 in Eugene, Ore.

"It's still sore; it's not going to heal up for another couple of weeks," said Stember, who grew up in Fair Oaks. "The bottom line is it just wasn't my destiny this time around.

"I am at peace ... I just feel like it's time for me to move on."

Stember electrified the U.S. Olympic Trials crowd at Hornet Stadium in 2000 with a third-place finish in the 1,500, roaring from seventh place with 300 meters to go.

He met the Olympic 'A' standard a month later in Monte Carlo and finished ninth in his semifinal in the Olympics in Sydney.

Stember won the state prep 1,600-meter title with a 4:04 effort as a junior at Jesuit. He also helped Stanford win the NCAA Outdoor championship in 2000 by finishing second in the 1,500 and fourth in the 800.

He owns personal bests of 1:46.20 in the 800 and 3:35.11 in the 1,500.
