The union representing about 2,000 Sacramento area janitors said it plans to take a strike vote when its current contract extension runs out Saturday.
The Service Employees International Union Local 1877 has been in talks for nearly two weeks with representatives of 13 janitorial contracting firms that service some of Sacramento's largest buildings. Negotiations have stalled over wages and health benefits, the union said.
The janitors have been working under a contract extension since May 31.
The SEIU plans a rally and march in downtown Sacramento Thursday. If the two sides don't reach an agreement by Saturday, union members will vote on whether to authorize a strike.
Calls on Wednesday to three Sacramento area janitorial services involved in the contract talks were not returned.
