The southbound lanes of Interstate 5 closed Friday night for repairs until June 23. Southbound drivers must exit at Richards Boulevard or J Street.
The repair schedule calls for the southbound lanes to be closed until 5 a.m. Monday, June 23.
Commuters from the north, including Yuba, Sutter and Placer counties, will face a challenge that wasn't in play during last week's work on northbound lanes – limited river crossings from the north into the downtown, state Transportation Department officials say.
Caltrans officials say they expect some heavy traffic, but aren't sure how heavy it will get or exactly where.
"It is going to take a day to find those hot spots and handle them," Caltrans project manager Ken Solak said.
State and city officials say they will keep an eye on inbound Highway 160 from Arden Way to 12th Street as well as the Capital City Freeway.
The I-5 freeway can still be used as a commute route over the American River, officials point out.
The freeway will be funneled down to two lanes over the river, day and night, throughout the coming week.
Drivers will be forced to exit at either Richards Boulevard, which has a short ramp and feeds onto a tight street, or at J Street, where two lanes will be available for exiting.
Caltrans' designated truck detour – west on I-80 into West Sacramento, then back east on Highway 50 into Sacramento – also may see heavy traffic, said Caltrans spokesman Mark Dinger.
In the evenings, downtown workers who normally use the I Street and Richards Boulevard ramps onto southbound I-5 will have to find alternatives. The P Street onramp southbound to I-5 will be open but is expected to be crowded.
Beginning with tonight's closure, crews will mimic work done last week on northbound lanes, cutting and removing the top roadway slab – anywhere from 6 to 24 inches thick – then installing a new drainage system and pouring new concrete.
The final 3/4-inch polyester road surface will be added during a second round of closures in both directions in late June and early July.
