Rocklin's family friendly, says survey

Parents.com named Rocklin as one of this year's 10 best towns for families, citing the Sierra Nevada foothill community's eco-conscious ways.
The Web site lists 10 places each year that mix what it calls big-city opportunities with suburban charm, and offers a blend of affordable houses, good jobs and schools, and open spaces. This year, efforts to save the planet were also factored into the decision. The list also appears in Family Circle magazine.
Rocklin, as the first California city to enroll in a public-private partnership to offset carbon emissions, made it to the top along with South Burlington, Vt.; Oro Valley, Ariz.; Brunswick, Ohio; Shoreview, Minn.; Wheeling, Ill.; Webster Groves, Mo.; Broken Arrow, Okla.; Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; and Ankeny, Iowa.
Parents.com noted that 9 of 13 of Rocklin's schools are considered California Distinguished Schools and that a solar energy system allowed the Rocklin Police Department to reduce electricity costs by 40 percent during the first six months of operation.
