A grass fire that burned five acres in southeastern Sacramento County on Tuesday threatened several buidlings before firefighters from the Saramento Metropolitan Fire District snuffed it out using a helicopter, a bulldozer and firetrucks.
The fire reported at 11:15 a.m. began along Excelsior Road about a half mile north of Jackson Highway. When the first crew arrived, the half-acre grass fire was endangering about five buildings, including homes.
A bulldozer cut fire lines to slow the fire and a helicopter dropped water. Ground crews with hose lines also worked to knock the fire down before it damaged any structures.
"Fire did get within 100 feet of several of the buildings," said Fire Capt. Jeff Lynch.
