California public schools chief Jack O'Connell endorsed Kevin Johnson for Sacramento mayor Wednesday, hours before they were scheduled to appear together at a town hall meeting about education.
In a statement released by Johnson's campaign, O'Connell, the state superintendent of public instruction, called Johnson "a strong leader" committed to improving city schools.
"Kevin Johnson recognizes that education must be a top priority to ensure that our children have the skills needed for a lifetime of success," O'Connell said.
Said Johnson: "Jack O'Connell is leading this state in addressing the achievement gap and engaging the entire education community in ways to improve our schools, particularly in our cities."
