Funeral home wins approval; owner to research chemical

Published: Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 | Page 2B

The City Council unanimously approved a new funeral home Tuesday night after the owner proposed using a formaldehyde-free chemical for embalming.

Ron Harder, who wants to open Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel at 6920 Destiny Drive, said he would hold off embalming for six months while researching use of glutaraldehyde as an alternative to formaldehyde, a possible carcinogen.

Nearby residents opposed the funeral home, which backs up to Antelope Creek Elementary School.

An analysis conducted by the Placer County Air Pollution Control District showed emissions from the property would be low and pose little risk of cancer.
