That wind this morning means several things:
Your golf game may be a little more challenging. It's a decent day to fly a kite. Sailors are probably already out on the water. Wigs and toupees may require extra attention.
And oh, that heat wave that trapped many of us inside and sapped the energy of those who ventured out, is over. Three days of 100-plus temperatures, gone with the wind.
During that mini heat wave, Sacramento quietly set a record - the low Friday morning was only 71. An average low is around 60. The high Friday was 105, which followed highs of 101 and 100 on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively.
But just as we were about to start griping, a brisk wind whisked away that nonsense and brought us something more civilized - a cooling trend featuring a practically frigid high of 82 by Sunday, according to George Cline, a forecaster at the Sacramento office of the National Weather Service.
As for this morning, though the low in Sacramento was only 66, it still felt like a relief. The winds from the southwest were gusting at 19 mph, Cline said.
That will pick up to 25 mph gusts by Sunday and 30 mph Sunday night. For you golfers, that means take two extra clubs into that kind of wind, play the ball back in your stance, abbreviate your follow-though and, you know, impress your buddies by rifling that low windcheater onto the green.
Sailors and kite fliers, let the wind be your friend. Alas, this is still Sacramento, not Seattle, so it's going to get hot again. In fact, highs in the 100s are not uncommon into the first two weeks of October, noted Cline.
Expect a high of 86 on Monday. By Tuesday, we'll be trending hotter, with a high in the low 90s. Thursday, we should be in the mid 90s and by Friday it'll high 99, according to Cline.
No cause for alarm. All this heat and the occasional cooling trend, is typical for Sacramento this time of year.
