The county's assistant coroner, Edward Smith, has been named manager of the year by the California State Coroner's Association.
Smith, 55, who joined the Coroner's Office in 1984, was nominated by former Coroner Robert Lyons.
Lyons cited Smith's development of a death investigation course for Northern California law enforcement agencies, his role in implementing a statewide electronic death investigation system and his efforts to improve organ and tissue harvesting across the state.
Smith received the award at the association's annual training symposium in Riverside.
