FOLSOM -- A fast-moving grass fire that blackened 16 acres along Lake Natoma, burned one small warehouse and wrecked several pieces of Folsom city equipment last Thursday was deliberately set, fire investigators announced Tuesday.
Investigators are looking for witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity in the area. They also are interested in viewing any video that may have been shot in the area that afternoon. Potential witnesses can call the national WE TIP Hotline at (800) 472-7766 or the Folsom Fire Department at (916) 984-2280.
Firefighters said a lack of strong winds saved the area from a much worse blaze.
Battalion Chief Dean Cross said the fire started between 5:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. on state beach and parkland along the bike trail near Young Wo Circle, west of the city's historic Sutter Street area. He said it was contained about 9:30 p.m., after burning into the city's corporation yard and destroying a shed containing a small mower-type tractor and a 20-foot trailer used to pick up hazardous household waste.
Cross said the fire burned up to the back of a house on River Way, where firefighters were able to stop it with the assistance of air drops.
