SACRAMENTO -- The City Council has agreed to loan up to $600,000 to five residential hotels to upgrade their electrical systems and provide air conditioning for their low-income residents.
City spokeswoman Jessica Hess said the money will be available to five hotels that do not have air-conditioned units: Golden, Congress, Marshall, Ridgeway and Wendell.
After three men died in their downtown hotel rooms, which lacked air conditioning, during last year's brutal heat wave, the city passed an ordinance requiring every residential hotel to have a cooled room as a haven from the heat by June 1.
Although some hotels did not meet that deadline, city officials Tuesday said all hotels are in compliance. The voluntary loan option passed by the council Tuesday will allow the hotels to provide a permanent air cooling system for a cooled room or cooling facilities, according to a city staff report.
