A 24-year-old senior airman at Beale Air Force Base was killed today when his Toyota van collided head-on with a truck on Highway 65 north of Lincoln, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The name of the victim, who lived in Rocklin, was not released pending notification of family, the CHP said. The driver of the truck, Austin Jansma, 18, of Roseville, suffered major injuries and was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. He was listed in fair condition by a hospital spokeswoman.
The stretch of Highway 65 was closed following the 9:30 a.m. accident and reopened at 12:10 p.m., the CHP said.
CHP investigators are trying to determine why the airman, who was driving south near Wise Road, went into the northbound lane, where he smashed into the six-wheel flatbed truck, Officer Maury Kane said.
"We're looking for anyone who may have witnessed the accident," Kane said.
The CHP's office in Newcastle can be reached at (916) 663-3344.
