Jim Pollock has played Dixieland on his banjo for many presidents and the Supreme Court but the prized instrument went missing in Folsom a few weeks ago, and he really wants it back.
He is working with a private detective and is offering a $5,000 to anyone who can put the 1931 Vega Vox #3 back in his hands. He also has alerted fellow banjo players throughout the area, contacted pawn shops and craftsmen who specialize in banjo repair.
Vega was a Connecticut-based maker of high end banjos and the Vox #3, valued at $15,000 according to Folsom Police, is a prime example of its work. Mention Vega to a banjo player and it is like saying Martin to a guitar player.
"I have other instruments but this is my chosen one," Pollock, 71, said today in a telephone interview. "I played for Gerald Ford in Vail. I have played for both Bushes, Richard Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower."
Several of those concerts occurred at Bohemian Grove but Pollock is tight-lipped about the details.
In April 2005 he was invited to play at a function hosted by members of the United States Supreme Court.
Pollock's GMC Yukon Denali was parked outside the Broadstone Racquet Club on Halidon Way on June 30 while he watched his grandchildren compete in a swimming event. The sport utility vehicle was stolen sometime between 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The vehicle was found a short distance away in Livermore Park, off Riley Street, on July 6. It was not damaged but Pollock's banjo and fly-fishing gear were gone. The banjo was in the SUV because he was on his way to the mountains for some vacation time, Pollock said.
