A 29-year-old UC Davis student assistant is being held on charges related to luring an 11 year-old south Sacramento girl over MySpace and sexually assaulting her in his Davis residence, officials said.
Sacramento Police spokesman Konrad Von Schoech said the girl's parents reported her missing Sunday at 7:15 p.m. The girl had indicated that she was taking a walk to meet her aunt, but the aunt had not seen her, Von Schoech said.
Police began to probe the girl's MySpace account, and found that she had been chatting with Andrew Nogroski. They got his cell phone number, and traced it to an address on the 900 block of J Street in Davis, Von Schoech said.
Davis Police officers went to the residence and knocked on the door. The girl answered. Von Schoech said they found evidence of alcohol use in the apartment.
Nogroski, who was also inside, was arrested and on Monday was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail, in lieu of $550,000 bail. He was charged in Sacramento Superior Court with two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior with a person younger than 14.
Von Schoech said the girl was taken into protective custody. Von Schoech said officers determined that Nogroski had picked the girl up near her house and taken her to Davis.
UC Davis spokeswoman Julia Ann Easley said Nogroski studied at UC Davis from the fall of 2005 to the spring of 2007 in the wildlife fisheries and conservation biology department. He is employed as a part-time student assistant in that department.
Easley said she notified the university's computer security and police when she heard of the arrest.
Von Schoech said the case underscores the importance of parents monitoring their children's internet use.
