A computer hacker believed to be a University of California, Davis, student broke into the private computer accounts of 168 other students during the past month, university officials disclosed Friday.
Campus police are investigating the computer break-ins, which occurred from a computer connection in a campus residence hall, said Bob Ono, campus technology security coordinator.
Ono said officials are uncertain so far what the hacker did on those accounts after gaining access.
"We are not aware of any unauthorized activity, other than logging in with passwords," Ono said.
The affected students were notified Friday, the day after officials confirmed the break-in, and were warned that the culprit could have gained access to credit card numbers and information for other financial accounts, as well as online accounts such as eBay and Facebook.
Officials said the break-ins occurred between Sept. 24 and Oct. 29 and were brought to their attention by students who reportedly overheard someone talking about hacking into student computers.
Ono said university officials have spoken with a student who may be the culprit, but Ono said Saturday that he did not know if campus police have interviewed the student yet.
Campus police detectives were not available for comment Saturday.
The student in question has moved out of a campus residence hall, Ono said, and may have withdrawn from the university.
Campus officials are advising the 168 affected students to change passwords on their computer accounts and online accounts, and to notify police if they notice suspicious activity in their financial accounts.
