Hybrid bobcat finds home at Folsom City Zoo

A hybrid bobcat captured along Elk Grove Boulevard last month was moved to the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary on Monday.

The 45-pound male hybrid bobcat, which is declawed, has been at the California Department of Fish and Game facility in Rancho Cordova. The animal was turned over to the department after an Elk Grove animal services officer captured it Jan. 29.

Department spokesman Kyle Orr said a new home was found for the animal, named Blue, after its owner, an Elk Grove woman, decided not to reclaim the animal.

"We're trying to act in the best interest of the animal," he said.

Blue was moved to the zoo after a wildlife veterinarian gave the animal a health checkup, Orr said.

Orr said a department investigation found that the animal was the offspring of a pixie-bob cat and a bobcat. The hybrid bobcat isn't considered wildlife because it is part domestic cat and therefore does not need a permit from the state, Orr said.

The woman would have needed to obtain a wildlife permit from the city of Elk Grove in order to keep Blue, whom she had as a pet for 13 years, said Maureen Null, animal services supervisor for the city.

Null said the woman would have had to find another place to live since zoning restrictions prevented her from having the animal where she lived.

The woman never submitted an application for the city permit, instead deciding it was in the best interest of Blue to turn him over to the zoo, Null said.

Blue was first spotted about 7:30 a.m. Jan. 29 walking behind the VCA Elk Grove Animal Hospital at 8640 Elk Grove Blvd. About 30 minutes later, the animal was spotted on the back patio of Cassidy's Family Restaurant at 9625 E. Stockton Blvd., said Christopher Trim, spokesman for the Elk Grove Police Department.

Trim said an animal services officer from the city of Elk Grove locked the hybrid bobcat in a dog run at the animal hospital about 8:30 a.m.
