Fire destroys gathering spot for artists, musicians

A two-alarm fire early this morning wiped out a gathering place for local artists and musicians.

The Sol Collective was a place where musicians played well into the night at 2010 Del Paso Blvd. in North Sacramento. But shortly before 1 a.m. today, a fire was reported at the building, and when crews arrived at Sol Collective, they found a raging fire inside the rear portion of the building.

A second alarm was sounded to bring additional help, and firefighters fought their way inside the building. Because of that determined effort, firefighters were able to prevent damage to adjacent businesses, Fire Capt. Jim Doucette stated in a press release.

The fire was traced to an outside storage area, and investigators are attempting to determine a cause. Doucette said that according to one witness, some homeless people had been occupying the storage area.

A once-vibrant strip, Del Paso Boulevard has lost much of its luster. Crime has increased and businesses have moved out. However, in recent years the city has poured money into the area.

Young sycamore trees now line the streets and public art dots the thoroughfare. Also, new street lights and medians have gussied up the old main street -- part of a landscaping and remodeling project -- costing more than $2 million -- that was launched about three years ago.

Meanwhile, some of the old buildings have been replaced with new ones. Others have been remodeled.
