The Placer Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has handed out its annual hero awards.
The winners, announced Friday night, were selected from public nominations:
Eric Croft, a firefighter who shimmied down a mine shaft vent to rescue a trapped golden retriever.
Tank, a Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix credited with flushing out a fleeing suspect from under a motor home.
Chandler Awalt, a teen who has held multiple fundraisers that have raised thousands of dollars to help animals.
Deborah and Robert Todd, who helped more than 30 neglected and abused Afghan hounds confiscated from a Meadow Vista home.
Rinda Pope, who brought back the lone surviving puppy of her son's dog from Iraq. Her son, Pfc. Alejandro "Alex" R. Varela, died while fighting in Baghdad.
"Women of Winchester," who organized fundraisers for the Placer Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
A dog named Thunder who helped a 9-year-old autistic boy, providing him with companionship and comfort.
