SACRAMENTO Mayor Heather Fargo on Wednesday declared today "International Workers Day in the City of Sacramento."
She issued the declaration in response to Latino immigrant and labor rights activists who plan a rally at 11 a.m. today on the west steps of the Capitol. May 1 is Labor Day in many countries. Immigrants in various U.S. cities plan to rally for legal status for undocumented workers.
Activists who met with Fargo included members of the League of United Latin American Citizens, the AFL-CIO, the Longshoremen's Union and two Sacramento groups, Americans for Democracy in Mexico and the Chicano Consortium.
"The mayor of Sacramento declares that no human being is illegal and looks forward to the day when people of the world are not divided by borders," the proclamation states.
Fargo said she thinks the United States needs immigration reform, but added, "I don't have a particular position I'm espousing at this time."
