Contract security guards at Kaiser Permanente's south Sacramento hospital are planning a three-day protest starting Tuesday morning over what they say are unfair labor practices by their employer, Inter-Con Security Systems Inc.
Pasadena-based Inter-Con, one of the world's largest privately held security firms, said this afternoon that it has responded by filing an unfair labor practice complaint against Service Employees International Union Local 24/7. SEIU for nearly three years has tried to organize the 1,500 Inter-Con guards posted at Kaiser facilities in California.
SEIU anticipates that about 400 Inter-Con employees will picket at 20 Kaiser facilities around the state through Thursday. Kaiser's Bruceville Road hospital is the only Sacramento area operation that will be picketed.
Kaiser spokesman Jeff Hausman emphasized that the security staff is employed by Inter-Con, which, he said, has made provisions for the strike.
"There will be a full staff of on-duty security guards," Hausman said this afternoon. "We do not expect these activities to have any impact on patient care or on the safety of our campus."
Inter-Con client's have included the Academy Awards, General Motors Corp. and NASA.
The SEIU said in a press release that the picketers will protest what the union and guards say are Inter-Con's anti-union practices, including threats and suspensions aimed at keeping the security guards from organizing.
Belen Acosta-Bradley, Inter-Con's chief administrative officer declined to talk about the strike, calling it "illegal."
"We've filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the union with the National Labor Relations Board," she said. "Until that is ruled on, we have no comment."
