SACRAMENTO An Oroville man was fined $500 and sentenced to 100 hours community service after pleading guilty to lying about his military service in violation of the newly enacted Stolen Valor Act, the U.S. attorney's office said Wednesday.
Michael Allan Fraser, 62, had bragged about serving in Vietnam and receiving two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and an Air Medal all of which was untrue, according to a news release.
Fraser's story was revealed as a fraud by a band of military activists who had pushed for the Stolen Valor Act, which was signed into law in December 2006.
According to the release, federal Magistrate Judge Edmund F. Brennan told Fraser during sentencing, "Those who do, do. And those who don't, talk about it."
