The city of Folsom is awash in potential names for a new bridge spanning the American River below Folsom Dam.
City staff members report that approximately 350 individuals submitted more than 800 proposed names as part of a bridge-naming contest between Feb. 21 and April 22.
Some of the entries are satirical or just plain funny, such as "Homeland Security Made Us Build This Bridge" (the closing of the Dam Road led to the bridge's construction), "It's About Damn Time Bridge," "Folsom's Sports Mom's Relief Bridge" and "Good Damn View Bridge." Most of the entries, however, are serious, reflecting in many cases the area's history.
The entries have been divided into 11 theme categories: 9/11 attack/freedom/veterans; individual recognition; American River; prison/Johnny Cash/Represa; Folsom Dam; Tri-county/Folsom, Auburn, El Dorado Hills/Natoma; Gold Rush History/Granite City; Folsom Lake; Italian/Spanish; American Canyon/Gorge; and miscellaneous.
The city council is expected to appoint a subcommittee Tuesday to review the entries and develop a list of preferred names for the council's consideration June 10.
The names submitted during the contest are available on the city's Web site at http://www.folsom.ca.us/agendas/MG111252/AS111257/AI112715/DO112850/DO_112850.pdf.
The new bridge and roadway, replacing Folsom Dam Road, are scheduled to open early next year. They will link East Natoma Street with Folsom-Auburn Road.
