Surrounded by about three dozen supporters at her midtown campaign headquarters, Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo held a press conference Monday to highlight her endorsements.
She was joined by representatives of the Sacramento City Teachers Association, the political arm of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, the Sacramento Sierra Building Trades Council, the Sacramento County Democratic Central Committee and the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento, among others. West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon was also on hand.
"I've got a lot of people watching my back right now, and that feels very good," Fargo said.
Linda Tuttle, president of the Sacramento City Teachers Association, said Fargo "believes in collective bargaining." Another union leader, Matt Kelly of the Sacramento Sierra Building Trades Council, said he supports Fargo in part because she backed hospital expansion projects that are providing jobs for his members.
Ed Bennett, president of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento, said Fargo has been a strong backer of rights for the gay and lesbian community. "She supports equality for all, truly," he said.
On Monday, Fargo became the first mayoral candidate to go on television with an unusual 10-second ad that consists simply of the word "Trust" emblazoned over her name.
"Basically, I am staking my entire campaign on one word, and that word is trust," Fargo said.
