In the more than 800 entries to name the new bridge over the American River just below Folsom Dam, you can detect disbelief that the multimillion-dollar structure was needed.
The entry "Homeland Security Made Us Build This Bridge" hits right at the need for security cited when the Folsom Dam Road was closed because of security concerns. "Terrorist-proof Span," "Now We're Safe Bridge" and "Thank God For Homeland Causeway" aren't far behind in their cynicism.
Other entrants couldn't resist playing with the proximity to a dam: "Good Dam View Bridge," "It's About Dam Time Bridge," "Double Darn Bridge" and about a dozen other variations.
The name of singer Johnny Cash, who immortalized the nearby prison in a live concert at the prison in 1968 and later in a best-selling album, is evoked in more than a half-dozen entries.
The vast majority of entries, however, are serious attempts, either descriptive names, such as "Vista Bridge," or names invoking the area's history, such as "Gold Rush Bridge."
The actual naming of the bridge, scheduled to open early next year, is a ways off. The Folsom City Council is expected to appoint a subcommittee today to review the entries and develop a list of preferred names for the council's consideration June 10.
But given the high expectations of the area officials for the bridge alleviating traffic woes, maybe the best entry is "The Bridge of Dreams."
