A kayaker who was lost for two days on the American River was rescued today by a group of local rafters and kayakers, the Placer County Sheriff's Department reported.
Brian Kelly, 25, of Colorado was located safe and unharmed Monday night sitting at the river's edge in rugged terrain past Euchre Bar by the rafters and kayakers who entered treacherous waters to go look for him, said Dena Erwin, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
The rafters stayed with Kelly all night and then rafted him to Iowa Hill Bridge, she said. The raft made the arrival at 2 p.m. and Kelly's parents, who had flown in from Colorado, were there to greet him, she said.
Kelly had been kayaking with two friends Sunday and the three attempted to navigate the north fork's dangerous rapids, which are classified as Class 4 and Class 5 rapids, Erwin said.
Kelly's friends last saw his empty kayak going downriver at about noon, she said. The friends tried to go back upriver to find him, but the terrain was too rugged, she said.
The friends called the Placer sheriff's office at 10 p.m. and a search, which included a helicopter, began Monday morning, Erwin said.
Several rafting groups and kayakers volunteered to go into the raging waters and eventually located the missing man, she said.
