A Marine originally from Sacramento but stationed at Camp Pendleton was found shot to death Thursday on a hillside in San Clemente, according to Orange County authorities.
Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said a man taking a walk about 9 a.m. spotted the 21-year-old Marine, dressed in his military fatigues.
Amormino said the man was shot in the upper torso. His body was discovered a few miles from the camp.
"It appears he was shot at the scene," Amormino said.
A Marine Corps spokesman at Camp Pendleton said officials were trying to verify the identity of the victim.
Amormino said the department's homicide detectives are investigating the case and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is assisting in it.
The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
