The city of Sacramento is considering an urgency ordinance to allow cyclists to use the K Street Mall downtown during the upcoming closure of Interstate 5 freeway.
City officials say they expect more commuters to ride bikes to work in June and July to avoid freeway congestion during the six weeks a downtown freeway section is closed for repairs.
At the same time, city streets are expected to be more congested with cars as well, making bike travel more dangerous.
Bikes have been banned for years from the downtown mall because city officials did not believe they should mix with pedestrians and light rail trains.
Temporarily opening the mall to bikes, however, would allow cyclists a safer east-west route through downtown, including to the bike trail head in Old Sacramento, city transportation official Linda Tucker said Friday.
"There are still some issues to be worked out," she said. "We would urge, of course, that bicyclists yield to pedestrians and show common courtesy."
The City Council is expected to consider the idea Tuesday.
Sections of I-5 will be closed intermittently between May 30 and July 15.
