Police investigating attack as hate crime

Published: Friday, Jun. 20, 2008

Sacramento police are looking for several men who allegedly attacked another man because they thought he was gay.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was punched and kicked by three or four men at 21st and J streets around midnight Friday, Sgt. Matt Young said.

He had just left a bar at 20th and K streets, and the men came up behind him and took him by surprise, police said.

Young said the attackers made derogatory remarks about his sexual orientation.

He suffered serious but non-life treatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, Young said.

Young said police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

"This is a very egregious crime that we don't tolerate in our community," Young said. "It's outrageous to be attacked without provocation."
