C.C. Myers, the Rancho Cordova contractor hired to fix Interstate 5 through downtown Sacramento is early - again.
He and Will Kempton, chief of California's transportation agency, reopened the southbound lanes of the so-called Boat Section of the freeway at 9 a.m. Sunday, almost a full day ahead of schedule.
The eight-day closure was the second of four during the "Big Fix" repairs of Interstate 5.
"In just over two weeks of around the clock construction, we've been able to rebuild over seven lane miles of interstate highway," Kempton said during the impromptu reopening of the roadway. " ... We're well on our way to fulfilling our pledge to get in, get to work and get out of the way.
Next up: Another closure of I-5's southbound lanes, July 8, between Richards Boulevard and the Highway 50 interchange. Another closure of the northbound lanes follows that, before all work is done on July 24, or earlier of Myers can help it.
"We like to beat the schedule when we can to get drivers back on the highway as soon as possible. We had a perfect safety record," said Myers, who has won acclaim for routinely beating highway repair deadlines and budgets. "Our construction team did an excellent job, and we can't say enough about the partnership with CalTrans."
