Lead bullets banned in condor habitat

Published: Tuesday, Jul. 01, 2008

A state ban on hunting with lead bullets begins today in California condor habitat, which encompasses part or all of 13 counties.

The new law is designed to protect condors from being poisoned by lead absorbed when they eat carcasses of hunted game.

The banned area closest to Sacramento includes parts of Santa Clara and Stanislaus counties.

The law prohibits possession of lead bullets while hunting in condor habitat.

The state Department of Fish and Game has an approved list of ammunition, which it expects to expand.

For more information on the ban, including maps of the condor areas, go to http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/condor/
