Saturday hours canceled at DMV offices

Cancel that weekend trip to the DMV for a driver's license. Saturday hours have been canceled this month at DMV field offices across the state because of budget-related staffing shortages, the agency announced Thursday.
"We are making contact with customers directly to reschedule pre-existing appointments," said Michael Marando, a spokesman for the Department of Motor Vehicles.
About a 1,000 DMV employees - most of them counter staff - were furloughed as part of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's executive order last week that terminated 10,133 temporary and part-time state workers to deal with the state's budget woes.
The reduced hours could lengthen lines at DMV offices from Yuba City to Chula Vista - 53 offices in all - that typically open on the third Saturday of each month, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Already, it takes 25 minutes longer, on average, to get service at a DMV counter, Marando said. "We do have a backlog," he said. "It depends on which office."
He urged people to make appointments or conduct their business online at http://www.dmv.ca.gov.
