No interest in Senate seat, Schwarzenegger says

Despite a Field Poll this week showing Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in a virtual tie with Sen. Barbara Boxer if he were to run for her seat in 2010, the Republican governor said Friday he has "no interest in that at all" during an appearance at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

Schwarzenegger joked that he was fine with the growing speculation about what he would do after he is forced to leave the Governor's Office in January 2011, implying that the rumors have been fueled by a desire by Boxer to raise money.

"This way she can raise more money when she says, 'That Schwarzenschnitzel, he's after me, he's after me, oh my god, we've got to raise a lot of money!'" Schwarzenegger said. "That's what this is all about. So, no, I have really no interest in that at all."

The governor also said he has no interest in running for Los Angeles mayor, another future office that some political pundits have speculated about.

Schwarzenegger held out hope that he and lawmakers can strike deals on health care and water despite a lack of agreements nearly two months into special sessions on both topics. While Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez said this week that a health care agreement must be reached by Thanksgiving, the governor seemed to expand the time frame available for reaching deals beyond that.

"First of all, let me just say, there are people that are saying, 'Is it dying because it hasn't been done?'" Schwarzenegger said. "Well we just have bridged over from October to November. So when I look at my calendar, there's still two months left."

The governor also tried to pressure lawmakers by saying their year is being viewed as a failure because they haven't struck a deal on health care and water.

"Right now, the voters are not happy with the legislators because they feel like they haven't done enough for them this year," Schwarzenegger said. "They've fallen short ... Get it done. Get health care reform done and get the water infrastructure done, and you will see their approval ratings shooting up through the roof."
