At times running, but mostly strolling shouder to shoulder, a happy throng of 25,000 people participated Saturday in the 12th annual Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure at Cal Expo. The event raised $2.5 million for local groups devoted to treat and triumph over breast cancer.
To accommodate the race crowd, portions of Exposition Boulevard were temporarily blocked off in front of Cal Expo. The 5K run and walk snaked through the adjacent Point West business park, then back into the fairgrounds. There were kids, church groups, women, grandmothers, husbands, families, baby strollers, and a bobbing sea of placards signifying corporate sponsors.
In a poignant touch, many of the participants wore a pink sign on their backs in memory of loved one. At the finish line, every participant was raucously applauded.
Donna Sanderson, executive director, Sacramento Affliliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, said, "I'm touched every year at how the Sacramento community embraces Komen's promise 'to save lives and end breast cancer forever'. It takes each and every one of us to make a difference, and this year we will."
A partial list of local grantees of Race for the Cure include: California Health Collaborative, Delta Health Care, Newman Family Resource Center, Sutter Cancer Center, Hmong Women's Heritage Association, and The Effort.
