Two Sacramento-based community health organizations Monday received $3 million to improve medical service for the poor and residents in underserved communities.
La Coopertiva Campesina, which provides services for migrant and seasonal farm workers and their families, received $394,000 to expand a personal health record system designed for low-income patients and their doctors.
Another $2.5 million went to the Health Professions Education Foundation. The state-run nonprofit provides scholarships and loan repayments to medical professionals who agree to work in medically underserved areas of California.
UnitedHealth Group Inc., a Minneapolis-based medical insurance company, awarded the grants as part of $6.2 million it is giving to 12 California nonprofits dedicated to improving health. The company's California unit, PacifiCare, covers approximately 2.9 million residents statewide.
