A hiring survey by a Sacramento personnel firm suggests the area's job slump is about to bottom out.
The quarterly survey by Pacific Staffing of 100 top area companies found that 59 percent plan to hire workers during the third quarter.
That compares with just 16 percent in the second quarter and 14 percent a year ago.
The survey's results are somewhat surprising, given the many forecasts of continued economic sluggishness or outright recession for the state and region.
Unemployment in the Sacramento area hit 6.4 percent in May, the highest since 1997. Payrolls in the area have fallen 0.4 percent in the past year.
