As gasoline prices climbed in April, Californians continued a trend of using less gasoline, according to figures released Wednesday.
The California Board of Equalization said 2.2 percent less gasoline was used in the state in April than in the same month in 2007.
The board said April statewide consumption was 1.257 billion gallons, about 4 percent less than in March.
The average price of gas rose from $3.61 per gallon in March to $3.85 a gallon in April 15 percent above the average price in April 2007. On Wednesday, AAA reported the average price of unleaded regular gasoline statewide was $4.29 a gallon.
The Board of Equalization said gas prices generated about $3.6 billion in sales tax in 2007, when the average price was $3.12. In contrast, gas sales generated $2.1 billion in 2003, when the average pump price was $1.88.
