The national average was down from 5.93 percent last week. A year ago rates were 6.34 percent.

Freddie Mac said 30-year rates haven't been so low since the week of Feb. 14, when they averaged 5.72 percent.

Rates for 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages averaged 5.35 percent this week, down from 5.54 percent last week.
