ZAP, the Santa Rosa-based maker of electric vehicles, said Thursday it shipped a record number of its all-electric cars in the third quarter that ended Sept. 30.
The company, which has a Rancho Cordova dealership, said the strong quarter was the result of the popularity of its Xebra line. ZAP said it shipped 240 Xebra vehicles to dealers in the three-month period, compared with 80 in the same period last year. The Xebra is a three-wheeled vehicle that uses no gasoline and comes in both sedan and truck configurations. It's designed to be driven at slower speeds, a maximum of 40 miles per hour. The Xebra's suggested retail price ranges from $11,700 to $12,500.
As a result of increased demand for its electric cars, ZAP said it increased its work force by 30 percent this year, mostly at its production and assembly facilities.
