Goodwill accepts old electronics

It's been a tradition to donate used clothing and appliances to Goodwill Industries. Now you can take your electronics there, too.
More than two dozen Goodwill collection sites in the Sacramento area are accepting electronics such as computers, cell phones, televisions and microwave ovens -- e-waste that might otherwise end up in landfills.
John Sweet, Goodwill's director of special operations in the region, said about 30 percent of the donations typically are resold in the Goodwill stores, while about 70 percent are shipped to Electronic Recyclers Inc. of Fresno for disposal.
The electronics are accepted at 16 retail stores, five smaller "Donation Express" outlets and six trailers, But Sweet said he wants donors to drop them off during operating hours so they can fill out paperwork required by state regulators.
Sweet said he didn't know how much revenue the recycling program generated for Goodwill, but said it was significant.
"If it covers our costs, I'm satisfied," he said. "Our big priority is to make sure we continue our commitment to divert items from the landfills."
