The Sacramento City Council voted 7-1 Tuesday to create an ad hoc committee that union leaders hope will tip the balance of a labor stalemate at Blue Diamond Growers.
Councilman Robbie Waters voted no and Councilman Ray Tretheway was absent, according to Marcy Rein, who works for International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Local 17.
Councilman Steve Cohn will chair the four-member committee, she said. The committee will seek to meet with Blue Diamond management, though the city has no authority over labor disputes at private firms.
Since late 2004 the union has attempted to organize the roughly 500 production and maintenance workers at the Blue Diamond plant at 17th and C streets.
Organizers, uneasy about their chances in a secret ballot on company premises, have yet to call for workers to vote on unionization.
